Within the ZIM-funded network OrganLifeTool, SOLID-CHEM GmbH participates, as a part of the subproject OrganLifeFluid, in the development of a future-oriented system for extracorporeal organ storage. Multiple life-sustaining measures through organ transplantation are not possible nowadays, because of a severe lack of suitable donor organs, although transplantation techniques are well established.

In the future, the OrganLifeFluid is supposed to contribute to harnessing donor organs over a longer period of time, or to regenerating donor organs that have been of limited use or even unusable, so far, and thereby making them accessible for unrestricted application, through special, (e.g. renoprotective) effective, protective (e.g. renoprotective) substances. The OrganLifeFluid will sustain the oxygen supply of the donor organ over a longer period of time, under physiological conditions, without cooling, and at the same time, if necessary, it will allow regenerative actions. The OrganLifeFluid, developed for perfusion of the donor organ, contains micro capsules stabilized in a physiological solution that functions for all essential supplies, until it can be exchanged for blood. Experimental studies have already shown that organ perfusion is superior towards static, cold storage.

As specialists for solid-state chemistry, SOLID-CHEM performs physico-chemical investigations to optimize, stabilize, control and standardize the OrganLifeFluid, under consideration of the chemical and mechanical stress of the micro capsules. A special field herein is the diffusion on interfaces of the capsule membrane and its alterations in the range of a few hundred nanometers, respectively, with the tendency for self and reorganization.
