Prof. Boese studied chemistry at the University of Marburg, Germany. He obtained his PhD in 1976 in organic and structural chemistry. Later he moved to the University of Duisburg-Essen where he established the structural chemistry group and assumed the position of Academic Director and Professor. He has been fascinated with X-ray crystallography and various crystallization techniques as a central challenge in the field of crystal engineering, solid state phase transitions and polymorphism. Industry projects on crystallization inhibitors or in situ crystallization techniques are a cornerstone of his reputation, and that of his research group.
With more than 700 papers, he is ranked amongst the 20 most cited chemists in Germany (2001-2013). Presenting more than one hundred invited and plenary lectures at national and international meetings in crystallography, chemistry and pharmacy, he is involved in numerous international and fruitful co-operations. He has provided expert opinions on X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) technology and the characterization of polymorphs by XRPD and other methods in several patent litigation cases trialed as far up as the German Federal Supreme Court, and acts as an expert in intellectual property litigations at the European Patent Office.
Dr. Schauerte studied chemistry at the University of GH Essen, Germany. He obtained his PhD in 2004 in inorganic and structural chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen. After a post-doctorate year at the Goethe-University, Frankfurt am Main, he moved back to his alma mater to continue his work in the field of structure-property relationships of small, organic molecules. With tenacity, motivation and many ideas, he took on the challenges of co-founding and managing solid-chem GmbH at the Biomedical Centre in Bochum in 2010. He focuses on pharmaceutical solid-state chemistry, polymorphism, intellectual property issues and claim specifications.
His long-standing experience in solid state chemistry allows him to keep an overview of the most important analytical methods to solve complex and difficult questions. An essential part of his work is to decide which analytical methods are most suitable for a given task; that is, he anticipates what results can be expected, which weaknesses exist, and what outcomes might be complementary or redundant. Keeping an eye on the financial requirements and the scientific specialties of solid-chem, he remains a motivated and passionate scientist who still feels highly connected to research.
Professor Dr. Roland Boese and Dr. Carsten Schauerte established the University spin-off company SOLID-CHEM GmbH in 2010 with laboratories at the Biomedical Centre in Bochum. The qualified expert personnel of the SOLID-CHEM GmbH has specialized in highly demanding, scientific problems. Solutions are developed based on cross-linked working methods, especially in the field of pharmaceutically active ingredients. Prof. Boese and Dr. Schauerte lead and support their solid-chem team in all aspects, catalyzing progress and outcomes of projects with their extensive experience, broad knowledge, out-of-the-box thinking, and excellent contacts to experts all over the world.
