Who could have imagined that masses of people are infected with a new illness, as a result of which major events are postponed or have to be canceled? Or that delivery bottlenecks for pharmaceutical drugs might occur? That schools are closed and entire industries have to send their workers into short-time work?


SOLID-CHEM action plan

Especially in these difficult times, our project partners rely on our solutions and need our support. We, as a company, face the social responsibility of not unnecessarily burdening the health care system while remaining fully capable of acting. Therefore, our action plan provides that SOLID-CHEM employees remain able to act even in the event of a possible quarantine. As a result, every employee was technically equipped so that he or she can work safely from home at any time. Practical work that requires attendance is organized in such a way that, in the event of a possible illness within the team, there are substitute regulations. Teamwork is made possible by using modern communication tools such as video conferencing the event of a quarantine. In addition, of course, the rule applies: those who are sick stay at home. No matter whether it is a corona infection, a “normal” flu or just a cold.

Innovation and research are siblings, and their parents are basic scientific research, usually originating from Universities. Within the fertile soil in their vicinity, you will frequently find the offsprings, i.e., many business „spin-offs“, preferably based on ideas called „unique selling features. “However, this alone is not enough because the founders are expected to overview business concerns as well, and / or having good consultants in this field. However, innovative ideas or research results cannot be produced and reproduced at will like industrial goods. Unfortunately, our consultants did not understand our difficulties in estimating our product‘s market value. Consequently, we had to make our own decisions until we can say after ten years that our company is stable, even for difficult times.

Our specialty is solid-state chemistry. And for the development of new or improved drugs, when administrated in the solid-state, it is needed to adapt the properties to industrial applications and processes. Many properties should be considered – there are solubility, bioavailability at desired levels, melting temperature, shelf-life stability, hygroscopicity, filtering properties, compressibility, tableting ability, and of course, the costs. The decisions are not trivial because there are many possible solid-state forms for producing or selection, e.g., crystalline polymorphs, co-crystals, salts, or amorphous states. The difficulties increase when the forms in the solid-state influence or even prohibit each other mutually.

In the pharmaceutical sector, it is always an exceedingly long way to succeed in innovative activities because of multidimensional links; especially, when advantages are related to disadvantages. Some of them require collaborating specialists to overview such cross-networking analyses and considerations. Finally, they have to understand the different languages when speaking to organic, bio, theoretical, and technical chemists, to pharmacists, formulation specialists, and, last but not least, with patent lawyers.

All this requires high flexibility, versatility, and compromising, which was recognized by awarding of the Innovation-Medal 2020 | 2021 to SOLID-CHEM GmbH.

Need to know what´s exactly in a product?

Deformulation, or reverse engineering, enables you to unlock the secrets of an unknown formulation, e.g. a slow-release tablet or a cream. solid-chem has a state-of-the-art instrumentation for structure elucidation. We can accurately identify and, even more important, quantify drug ingredients and additives in drug products. It is likewise important to precisely determine the excipients in their solid-state forms using on our own samples and analytical data, comparing them with a vast number of polymorphs and pseudopolymorphs, using combined analytical methods and strategies.

Thus, you will receive a working recipe to accelerate your formulation development.

Based on the results from the deformulation, we can help you with a reformulation of the final product.
